The new Agua Caliente Casino in Cathedral City quietly opened this week, just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend when the Coachella Valley is expected to see an influx of tourists despite state and federal warnings against travel and gatherings amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

The casino at East Palm Canyon and Date Palm drives is the third gaming facility for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians; the others are in Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.

In Cathedral City, casino-goers will find a medium-sized facility that’s smaller than Rancho Mirage, but larger — and more open — than Palm Springs.

The tribe has said the casino features 30,000 square feet of gaming space, including over 500 slot machines and eight table games. An outdoor pavilion is expected to eventually host live entertainment, food truck events, cultural gatherings and more.

Several restaurants include the sports bar 360 Sports, which has another location at the Agua Caliente casino in Rancho Mirage, a 'casual upscale' restaurant called Café One Eleven, and a Java Caliente shop for gourmet coffees, juices, salads and other light fare.

The tribe issued a surprise opening announcement on Twitter about 8 p.m. Tuesday and confirmed the news on the casino's website. By 10 a.m. Wednesday, the parking lot was filled and numerous slot machines were occupied by players.

Café One Eleven was serving breakfast to a handful of customers while others waited for coffee at Java Caliente. Sporting events were shown on large screens at the 360 Sports area. Everyone inside the casino wore masks and the crowd was small enough for players to space themselves out and maintain 6-foot distances.

Cathedral City Mayor John Aguilar said Wednesday that the city knew the casino would be open before the end of the month, and possibly before Thanksgiving.

'We're incredibly happy and proud of our partnership with the tribe,' he said. 'What a great economic boost to our community, and especially now during the pandemic, to have that facility open.'

Last month, a job fair was held for more than 300 jobs at the three casinos.

According to an environmental impact report created before coronavirus, the tribe said that revenue from the development would be used to 'develop a much needed tribal court system, create a robust tax commission, and to address the growing homelessness problem' on its reservation. The same report said that about 1,000 parking spaces would be added, and potentially a two-story parking deck with 240 additional spaces.

Palm Desert resident Ken Sullivan, 60, said he walked out of the casino $50 lighter on Wednesday, but that didn’t bother him. After a year of waiting, the slot enthusiast was looking for a peek into the desert’s newest casino and he got what he wanted.

“It’s a fancy joint. Good enough to bring friends and burn some money,” Sullivan said. It may be good enough to get his gambling fix, he added, but the best casino in the Coachella Valley in his mind is Fantasy Springs.

The land upon which the casino was built is newly owned by the Agua Caliente tribe, which announced last October that the federal government approved a transfer of the land — which was adjacent to the existing reservation — into trust. Groundbreaking was not far behind, in November 2019.

Other large-scale Agua Caliente developments in the valley

Though the tribe also had plans to build a $250 million sports and entertainment arena in downtown Palm Springs with the Los Angeles company Oak View Group, that project moved in another direction earlier this year.

The arena is now planned for an unincorporated piece of land just north of the city of Palm Desert and Agua Caliente is no longer involved.

In an interview with The Desert Sun in September, OVG CEO and co-founder Tim Leiweke explained how the company's partnership with Agua Caliente 'ultimately unwound' and discussions began with the Berger Foundation, a group that Leiweke said he's known for years. Concerns about parking and traffic also bogged down the Palm Springs plans.

The tribe faced 'a moment of truth' when coronavirus first hit in March, Leiweke said. As the virus forced the tribe's casino properties in the Coachella Valley to close alongside other local businesses, the arena project also paused.

Around April, Agua Caliente 'came back and just said, 'This is not something we can commit to today. Because of what's going on (with COVID), our priorities have changed,' Leiweke said. 'So, we acknowledged that and said, 'Okay, but we can't sit around and wait because unfortunately for us, we got the clock ticking on an American Hockey League team.'

OVG is now moving ahead on the privately funded arena with the H.N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation, a local nonprofit that owns the land and will lease it to OVG.

At the time, Agua Caliente Chairman Jeff Grubbe said in a press release that the tribe 're-evaluated its economic development priorities' and was instead focusing on the new Cathedral City casino and cultural center in downtown Palm Springs.

'After working together for more than a year to put a joint-venture project together, and then another three months to negotiate a land lease, we couldn’t find that common thread to reach an agreement for the arena project,' Grubbe said.

The Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza, which is being constructed on the corner of North Indian Canyon Drive and East Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs, is also set to open by the end of the year, though the tribe has not specified when exactly. The plaza will house the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum and other tribal business entities.
